A post on pasta? Seriously?
“Why are you even writing this post???” One of my friends asked me when I told her what my next “Word of the Day” would be about. And I know you’re wondering and shaking your head too. “It’s not like your readers are dumb, Sarah. We don’t live under rocks,” she reminded me.
“Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind,” I answered with a small smile.
“Obviously everyone the entire world over knows that pasta is the solid foundation on which the entirety of Italian cuisine has been built. And if they don’t know what pasta is, they shouldn’t be thinking of visiting Italy, and I don’t know how they’d get interested in a blog about Italy! So your post is unnecessary, really.” Case closed. Or so she thought….
Yes, I will agree that 99% of the world’s population already knows that pasta is noodles of various shapes and sizes, sometimes stuffed with delicious little fillings like meat or cheese, and often covered in tantalizing sauces like Bolognese, Carbonara, and Arrabbiata. But, I won’t let this common knowledge take the wind out of my sails!
Because what everyone already doesn’t know is that una pasta can also look like this:
And that paste (more than one pasta) are often sold in the pasticceria – a place that often proudly displays a window full of calorific pastries and sweets:
So the next time someone offers you una pasta, or un pasticcino (a little one) for colazione (breakfast) in a bar in Italy, you’ll know to accept their offer of a pastry with a smile.
(Now you’re thinking it was worth the blog post, right?)
My favourite pasta is the sfoglia con mela at our local bar in Bagni di Lucca. Annalisa makes them fresh every morning. I have studied paste all over Italy and this is the one I want for my breakfast every morning. I miss them so much when I am back in Australia. Only about 12 weeks until I can have another.
The count will get fat with all of these. But is excited to eat them with your lovely self.
